The Need for a Community-Based Dementia Care Strategy

Over the years there have been many advances in dementia care that give cause for optimism. Yet, despite the upward trajectory of these steps in the right direction, there is still much more climbing that needs to be done. A recent essay in the Healthcare Papers calls for just that—a renewed focus on improving policy, research and supports, and an overall dementia care strategy that is grounded in communities.

Dementia threatens the sustainability of our health an d social services systems with over half a million Canadians living with Dementia (PLWD) today and nearly one million PLWD expected within 15 years (Alzheimer Society of Canada 2017). With the growth of the aging population and health care system costs, as well as caregivers’ out-of-pocket costs, expected to rise dramatically, the need for key changes in dementia care is more important than ever.

One of those changes involves those who have dementia in their own care decisions. Additionally, those with dementia should also be able to live at home as long as it enhances their well-being. The reason many do not is because family caregivers get burnt out, and understandably so. This is why better support for caregivers financially, socially and psychologically is another much-needed change. Finally, to encourage more medical findings, policies must also support the data sharing that is key in giving vital research the momentum it needs.

Change of any kind can sometimes be an uphill climb. The same is true when it comes to propelling progress in dementia care. Yet, with a growing awareness of the obstacles faced and a better understanding of the need for systemic change, there is much to be hopeful about. Until then, I will continue to do what I can within my capacity to help those who need the help today.  🙂
