More Studies on Coconut Oil as a Natural Remedy for Alzheimer’s Disease

The latest news written in a December 2012 press release, printed by the San Francisco Chronicle, is that coconut oil is a natural way to help slow down and even reverse the affects of Alzheimer’s disease.  “Using recent research findings demonstrating the benefits of coconut oil, Dr. J. G. Moellendorf has integrated coconut oil into Chiropractic and Naturopathic care to effectively slow down and even reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.”

The researchers in this article compare Alzheimer’s disease to diabetes in the brain. They say “In Alzheimer’s disease, the brain cells practically starve to death as they become increasingly resistant to the effects of insulin and this results in impaired brain functioning, and eventually a loss of memory, speech, movement, and personality.”

One of the researches Dr. R. L. Veech, has found that ketone bodies can be used to feed the brain when it is not able to use glucose due to insulin resistance.  He has found that chain triglycerides (MCTs) are quickly converted into ketones by the liver. An easy way to access chain triglycerides is by using coconut oil, as it is 66 per cent MCTs, which convert to ketones rather than store as fat.

It’s a little unbelievable that a simple and natural ingredient can be used to help people with Alzheimer’s disease regain memory, but definitely something to try, as it’s inexpensive and can’t hurt.  Dr. Veech recommends using up to 8 teaspoons daily. “It is best to start at 1 teaspoon daily and gradually increase over the next one to two weeks.

If you start your own research and use coconut oil as a therapy for yourself or a loved one… please feel free to share with us if you see any improvements.

Karen 🙂
